New and Noteworthy

I always love when I rummage through the great melting pot that is music and stumble upon something promising. It you listen to a song you can pick out the various influences (yes, even classical traits exist in modern music). Sometimes the mix can be rather unfortunate, like the way Thy Symphony combined opera vocals with metal. Oops! On the other hand, it can be amazingly pleasing. Ryan Calhoun, an unsigned artist based out of L.A. is a prime example.

Jon Foreman, Something for Everyone

Jon Foreman’s MySpace Page

With a vocal quality similar to Dave Matthews or Isaac Slade (the lead singer from the The Fray), Jon Foreman’s music has acoustical drive with folk undertones. He is an artist who truly loves his music and isn’t affected by the modern music industry. I admire Jon Foreman for his strong connection to music:

“I’m so thankful that these songs still mean so much to me. In fact, I am perhaps more drawn to music than ever… Lately music has been my compass: it’s neither the map, nor the road but a steady constant that can help me make sense of the both.”

Most of his songs are quiet and relaxing. They tend to be focused on sadness and have mellow chord progressions, often including an acoustical guitar. However, his tunes aren’t monotonous or over-simplistic. Listening to Foreman can ease you through a painful experience or, at the very least, comfort you during a stressful time.

Liz Golden, Another Talented Member of the Golden Family

photo courtesy of www.myspace.com/lizgoldenmusic The Golden family must be doing something right. Not only is Josh Golden a talented musician at age 14, but his sister, Liz Golden, age 17 is working on an her own EP as well. We’ll focus on Liz for now. She offers acoustically styled music with folk and country influences, both prevalent in the vocal style and harmonization choices. I’m blown away by her talent. Born in 1991, she sounds like a twenty-something year old artist. And of course my favorite part about her: she writes her own music.
